The University of Zaragoza, founded in 1542, has managed to combine tradition with a permanent process of modernisation and innovation. It offers Degrees, Masters and Doctoral Programmes in the areas of Science, Technology, Humanities, Biomedicine, Law, Social Sciences and Business and Economic Studies. In the academic year 2010-11 these studies were followed by more than 35,000 students, out of which 4 % benefited from programmes such as Erasmus, Leonardo and other international exchange programmes with North-America, Latin-America, Asia, Australasia and Africa etc. The University of Zaragoza is one of the most active universities in student mobility in Spain. We have around 1000 agreements with more than 320 European Higher Education Institutions. The university has 55 Departments endowed with modern scientific equipment and an outstanding ITC service. It offers excellent opportunities of collaboration to research teams and supports scientific research and exchange cooperation programmes with a high number of universities, having special relations with many Western European, Latin American and North American institutions.

| Granada and the UniversityThe Universidad de Granada, founded in 1531, continues a long teaching tradition, the roots of which can be traced back to the madrasahs of the last Nasrid Kingdom.The University is a vibrant presence in the city of Granada, benefiting from the distinctive beauty of its environment and a privileged geographical location due to its proximity to the Sierra Nevada, an excellent ski resort and the Mediterranean coast, with several major tourist sites, including Motril, Almuñécar and Salobreña.
In Granada, there are four University Campuses, as well as the “Campus Centro”, in which all the centres spread throughout the historic part of the city are brought together. The UGR‘s policy of using buildings of historical and cultural value has enriched its heritage, as well as promoting the restoration and maintenance of these buildings. In addition to this emphasis on more traditional elements, the Health Science Technological Park, which is still being developed, demonstrates our strong commitment to innovation by promoting interaction with technological bio-health companies and favouring high-quality healthcare and biomedical knowledge. There are two other UGR Campuses in the cities of Ceuta and Melilla, in Northern Africa. Over 60,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students study at the UGR, with another 20,000 students taking additional courses, language courses, summer courses etc. The University employs 3650 lecturers and over 2000 administration, technical and maintenance staff. The Rector is Mr Francisco González Lodeiro and the Management of the University operates through several collegiate bodies, such as the Faculty and the Governing Council, and individual bodies, such as the Vice-Rectors’ Offices, Management and General Secretariat. Teaching At present, courses for 75 different qualifications are taught in the 28 teaching centres of the UGR. The courses are taught across 116 departments. The Postgraduate School offers 68 master’s courses, 116 doctorate programmes and 113 additional courses. Summer courses are organised in the cities of Ceuta and Melilla; in Granada and other towns in the province, summer courses are organised by the Mediterranean Centre. Throughout the year the Modern Languages Centre teaches Spanish, teaching methodology and foreign language courses, which are open to the general public. The Open Centre for Lifelong Learning offers a range of courses for mature students where no previous academic qualifications are required. The aim of the University Business Foundation is to increase awareness and communication between the university and business world and promote training activities to supplement university qualifications. The Virtual Teaching Centre organises virtual training initiatives to support face-to-face teaching, and also offers other specific training activities. Research The commitment to high-quality research has placed the Universidad de Granada in a prominent position in terms of national rankings. The financing of 346 research groups illustrates this commitment. Through the Spanish Research Programme, as well as other national programmes and organisations, the University supports 165 research projects, and the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Business has provided financial support to 78 Projects of Excellence. The Scientific Instrumentation Centre (CIC) offers various services to support research, focusing in particular on experimental subjects. Collaboration on international projects, as well as seeking resources and partners, is managed through the International Projects Office (OPI). In addition to the research work of the departments, the UGR has 12 research institutes, as well as other specific research units and centres that focus their work on specific areas. International relations For many years, the UGR has promoted a significant international activity through the Vice-Rector’s Office for International Relations. The importance of the presence of international students is most clearly demonstrated by the 606 mobility agreements signed with European Higher Education institutions and the ERASMUS mobility programmes; the UGR is the leading European university in terms of receiving students and the second Spanish university in terms of the mobility of its own students. The University is also involved in major exchange programmes with universities in the United States, Canada, Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Mediterranean countries, Australia, Oceania and Asia. *Redamed: Network for the Analysis of the Socioeconomic and Demographic Dynamics of the Mediterranean World *Ibero-American University Council Culture, cooperation and sport Through the Secretariat of Culture, Arts and Development Cooperation, the UGR carries out a series of cultural educational and promotional activities, open to the general public, in the areas of science, technology, social sciences and the arts. The University’s cultural programme in terms of audiovisual contemporary cultural events is managed by the Centre for Contemporary Culture. The various Campuses offer a range of sporting facilities such as football and rugby pitches, multi-sports facilities, covered areas, swimming pool etc. Each year, the Sporting Activities Centre offers over 400 courses for all kinds of sports. Quality As a result of the UGR‘s commitment to both society and itself, a number of quality assurance mechanisms have been developed in relation to its services, centres, qualifications and lecturers, which operate through several [gobierno/vicerrectorados/calidad|Secretariats of Evaluation, Quality Support and Teaching Improvement]]. The quality of life of the University Community is another of the UGR‘s objectives and a specific office deals with actions in this area.
